Megan Derr sure knows how to hook me into a story with but 12,000 words. I loved the imagery and the setting she created and I hope she plans on extending this free story.

This is another prime example of some of the impressive stories that the DRitC events offered up, for gratuitous!
I loved the fantasy setting and the splendid world-building created here, and the writing itself was gorgeous. Overall, this was quite an impressive story because its limited page number.
Derr is an author that I haven't read much of, but who is clearly a skilled writer with a wealth of original stories to tell. I await forrad to exploring her works in the future.

I actually dismissed this story when it first came out during LiAW. I wasn't familiar with Megan Derr's stories at that time -- and I was reluctant due to the idea of fantasy/medieval fantasy/regency theme that Megan Derr seemed to do. Of course, I inverse my stance over her stories since then.
This one was slightly different because the characters didn't really 'connect' until Part 3 (or about half-way). Her other stories ordinarily featured characters who had known each other, but one did

Allen was sent to be High Rex'southward consort, he was an good in language and affairs but not in fighting. High King Sarrica, on the other hand, used to accept a warrior as partner (Sarrica'due south partner died half dozen years ago), and he dismissed Allen outright. I wish I saw that -- but alas, it happened earlier the story started.
Because of that, I didn't experience the connexion between Allen and Sarrica equally potent as some of Megan Derr's couples. I knew that Allen had feeling for his King, simply I needed more convincing, I estimate, to fully belief that Sarrica loved Allen in a fashion that should be. Still, every bit always, Megan Derr's 'earth' was wonderful and easy to follow, and I loved her imagery.

I seem to exist in a minority when it comes to this story. The just thing I liked was the promise of an interesting world. A promise, zippo more.

The story: King'southward advisers and friends managed to sneak in Prince Allen to be presented to the king as a possible consort. His lover, a swell warrior, died half-dozen years agone and he avoided every possible attempt to supersede him. We are told how the king mocked and embarrassed prince Allen and made him leave the courtroom. All that because he isn't a warrior. We never see that scene, which is wrong since it is the base of operations for the whole plot. Allen, hurt and embarrassed, leaves with the kings soldiers to help them with some tribes (he isn't equally incapable as the king thinks afterward all). Information technology actually doesn't matter what happens afterward that. As I said, I liked the promise of the world.
As far as the characters are concerned, I didn't run into any connection between the king and Allen. At that place isn't whatsoever chemistry betwixt them any. I've read shorter stories than this i where the characters don't fifty-fifty say much and nevertheless their chemistry is profound (When You Were Pixels or Interlude with Tattoos to proper noun a few). That is and then not the case here. 'I was sent to exist a consort and that's why I want to be a consort' seems to exist good enough for Allan. The king doesn't fifty-fifty give that much. The but supposedly hot scene was out of place (and wrong time).
Oh, and you'll get to see sentences like this i: 'Only it wasn't like he going to stay out long.'
It's a shame actually. I think this might have been a good story if someone bothered to bank check the things that were missing.

I had a huge smile on my face waiting for the High King to realize but how dandy Allen was and for Allen to save the solar day, as it was obvious he would. Like many of Megan Derr's stories, this is anticipated. But no matter the lack of surprise, or the fact that she'due south written and so many stories similar to this, I ever love them. She has a style of filling even the shortest of stories with so much sensory information and meaty history that you experience like you're getting a whole novel's worth in 30 minutes reading time. She'due south one of those authors that seems to create a whole new fleshed out world for each story, and even if they take much in common with her other'southward, they all seem vastly different because of that wealth of senses that bring the story alive. I hope she makes this one a series!

Strong bones here; love the setting and the characters and the writing is pure Megan. After finishing I kept thinking, "Wow, I really wish there was MOAR. Based on how much I liked this short, I'g sure I'll love the novel. I might even have to splurge on the audio - or come across if I tin can request information technology from the library.

Sparkling characters and the odd wry smile packed into a tiny, pretty package.
4.5 stars, easy. Megan Derr possesses that souvenir I wish all writers of epic fantasy had: to drop you into a world and make you lot get it without beingness infodumpy. Though the first chip is substantially orientation, she lets you explore with Allen, and his exploration is fraught with the tension of his situation. If it had pages, I'd have flipped frantically.Sparkling characters and the odd wry grin packed into a tiny, pretty packet.

This was a wonderful short story. I loved the blend of high fantasy with the lite romance just beginning near the end. There was a skilful strong plot that conveyed a lot of practiced elements in a brusque amount of space. I say this all the fourth dimension when I read short stories, merely I would have loved for this 1 to have kept going considering of how much I enjoyed it.Prince Allen is a learned man and is eager about being called to the High King's court to become the Rex's consort. He is devastated to discover that not only does the Rex not want him, but the Rex shame'southward him before his warriors with his laughter and insults. Allen finds the prospect of returning abode in disgrace impossible. He sees an opportunity to utilize his strengths and show the rex that he is worthy. It is a dangerous mission into the mountains amid state of war-similar peoples that do not speak a common language. Allen is gifted with languages so he is accepted by the captain of the King's mercenaries to accompany the men.
The Male monarch finds guilt weighing heavily on him for the dismissal and mockery of Prince Allen without giving the man a risk. He intended to apologize to Allen that very night and begin anew, but lost his take a chance when Allen disappeared. It is some fourth dimension later that he receives a demand from the mount kingdom to which he sent his men on a secret mission. His men are dead all save the four leaders who will be killed if he does not come in person to explain their presence. A shocking development occurs when he discovers that a letter is secretly affixed to the need and it is from Allen alarm him of the enemy's truthful plans. It seems he has under-estimated the worth and strength of Prince Allen, only volition he get in in time to share that?
I but loved Allen. He was a wonderful stiff beta hero. When he is publicly humiliated and barred from the King's Courtroom, he doesn't curl up in a corner feeling sorry for himself or slink off home to mommy. Allen has steel and determination in him if not the skills of a warrior. He is worthy and, fifty-fifty when he is fearful, he sets out to help the Male monarch and the kingdom.
I will caution those who love their steamy romances that this i is devoid of that considering the characters don't actually come together in a human relationship until about the stop when they are merely tentatively reaching out to brand a try at romance.
This was a really squeamish read!

I found the storytelling to be thoroughly enjoyable. The author drops readers into this rich globe, with history and backstory that seems like it could get on for pages and pages, but masterfully delivers it in an engaging way throughout. The characters of Allen and Sarrica demonstrate complexity that is often hard to discover in stories of this length and I plant myself wanting to read more most both the history and the futurity of this kingdom.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a M/Yard romance in a medieval fantasy setting. Overall, information technology'due south a bit fluffy (no abundance of steamy romance hither, though information technology is an 18+ read), but is a cute and encouraging story.

Megan Derr's writing reminds me of those fairytales I listened to when I was young, the writing just seems so light, and the characters troubles may pressure level them, only the style in which they are told don't make it gloomy. You get sucked into her story world right away, although Derr doesn't explain it in corking detail.
The primary reason why I gave this volume precisely this rating is that there's one major plot hole that eats information technology'due south style through the unabridged book. The changes happen too fast, especially 3.5

You get sucked into her story globe right away, although Derr doesn't explicate it in slap-up item.
The main reason why I gave this book precisely this rating is that there's one major plot hole that eats information technology'due south way through the entire book. The changes happen too fast, peculiarly at the end when mutual attraction bloomed between Allen and the High King Sarrica. I just felt that at that place was somekind of connection missing. As the part where they first met wasn't included, there was merely something missing that would've been important for me in this story. This way I couldn't really savour the part where Sarrica comes to Allen'southward rescue, because I didn't knew much most their first meeting. Sarrica humiliates Allen when they kickoff meet and this is such a huge issue for Allen, that he goes on a mission with a grouping of soldiers. It wouldn't have mattered if their first meeting didn't hold much importance for either of them, but the fashion information technology is, the absenteeism of it is responsible for the two missing stars.
All in all this book was nice to read, short and sweet, and ideal for reading before going to bed. ...more

I liked the thought, but the story was too short, even for a novella.
The characters, the world building, the writing. It was all bang-up. Just, unfortunately this novella feels similar it's a rough draft for a book. Everything is rushed and I'm sad but there's simply no romance in this novella.
I just hope that i solar day the author rewrites this novella and makes it the book information technology should have been from the start.
